Boris Sirpo papers [manuscript], 1932-1966.

The Boris Sirpo papers document the conductor's musical career at Marylhurst and Lewis and Clark Colleges and as founder and director of Portland and Hood River based orchestras and festivals. Materials include scrapbooks, correspondence, and other materials. Correspondents include Wheeler Beckett, Herbert Hoover, Eugene Ormandy, Louis Persinger, Jean Sibelius, and Felix Weingartner. Some correspondence relates to Finnish violinist Heimo Haitto, Sirpo's student and foster son. Conductor Boris Sirpo taught in Portland colleges, founded and conducted several musical ensembles, and organized music events. Sirpo received a distinguished musical education in his native Finland and in conservatories throughout Europe. He founded the conservatory of music in Viipuri, Finland and conducted the Viipuri and Helskinki symphony orchestras. He immigrated to America in 1940 to escape the Russian invasion of Finland.
